Copperfield caps are sized to overhang by 1.5 inches minimum, so a 9″ by 13″ terracotta flue takes a 10″ by 14″ cap. The mesh height matters too: 5/8-inch mesh is standard for most fireplaces, but if you’ve got a factory-built fireplace or a woodstove insert, you may need 3/4-inch mesh to meet Maryland clearance codes.

For the galvanized line, we typically stick with OEM: the fit tolerances are tighter, and the skirt angles are proprietary. On stainless units, a quality aftermarket cap from Olympia Chimney often runs the same 304 steel at a lower parts cost, and we pass that through.
Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

DIY or Call Us?
There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is visibly askew, whether the mesh has obvious gaps, and whether water’s pooling on the hearth after rain. Use binoculars, not a ladder.
